The Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad was chartered when Belfast was a bustling seaport. Although the original intension was to build a railroad all the way from Belfast to the shores of Moosehead Lake, to connect with the Canadian Pacific somewhere near Greenville, the railroad was pretty much cut off from that dream by the time it was started. The name stayed however, and the B&ML would remain confined to its 33.3 miles of track between MP 0 in Belfast yard, to MP 33, just outside Burnham Jct, where the B&ML connects with the outside world, via the Maine Central. Following the collapse of the poultry industry in Waldo County, Maine, the B&ML almost shut down, however the board of directors voted to start tourist passenger train rides to keep the railroad going. Through various managers and owners, the B&ML rolled along, until a clause in the lease to own agreement signed by Railstar, caused the line to revert back to its owner, the Unity Foundation. Since late 2004, there has been only one equipment move, by the Unity Foundation, to remove all equipment from the Belfast yard. No wheel has been turned on the 33 miles of rail since. |
